Getting Closer to the Truth!

Cal Ormond has been on the run for seven months now, and his father’s death’s anniversary is coming up—as is his sixteenth birthday. This month, he must find his great-aunt; keep the riddle, drawings, and jewel out of enemy hands; and stay alive.

In this book, Cal finally has all the pieces to put the mystery together—aside from those last two lines of the riddle. It isn’t likely that he’ll solve the whole thing until December, but were getting there slowly, and without the tracker in his shoulder, Sligo and Oriana must find him the old-fashioned way.

My family played board games all weekend, so I didn’t have much time to sit down and read, but I still managed to finish it on Sunday. I read the whole second half in one go!

Cal has the most horrendous luck—he keeps getting into danger and miraculously getting himself out of it again. This book was yet again from his point of view, in the past tense, with all the bells and whistles of the previous books (reverse page numbers, timestamps, etc.).

After finding that picture with Winter wearing the Jewel, Cal isn’t sure he can trust her, but he always has Boges. With his dad’s death’s anniversary coming up, he feels lonelier than ever, and he’ll even have to spend his birthday without his family if he stays on the run. We don’t get anything of Repro or Jennifer in this book, but I’m sure they’ll make more appearances in future; we do, however, get the reappearance of some of Sligo’s goons, Zombrovski and Bruno, who are making things difficult for Cal as usual.

Despite his lack of trust in Winter, it seems more than ever that the romantic tension between them is increasing. Aside from that, Cal’s friendship with Boges is as strong as ever. His little sister is still in a coma, but she’s now at home, and his family wants him back for his birthday; they think they can sort everything out. Cal is also getting closer to the “twin baby disappearance nightmare” that seems to be about him.

The writing continues to be wrought with suspense and thrill with all the danger that Cal gets into, but there are pockets of relaxation and mystery-solving in between the action. They’re getting more and more information to piece everything together, with Piers Ormond being a big help.

The beginning of the book is fast-paced as Cal gets out of the situation left from the last book. Then, it’s a lot more of Cal getting around than getting into trouble—though trouble always seems to find him!

Once again, I recommend this whole series to teen boys and lovers of conspiracy theories.
