Synopsis: Alexis, cycling to see friends at the stable, meets a stranger on the roadway—after she slams into his truck’s open door. She shakes off the collision, but her inner radar twangs. Later, she meets Lewa, another mystery stranger, in the loft. The stable has curious history, but so does Lewa. Alexis uncovers a family intrigue involving parrots, felony, and hidden truths all relating to her mother and unknown father, as well as Lewa. Alexis’ friends are there for her, and together they help Lewa plunge into a daring parrot rescue. Author Rosemary Rigsby reached out to me with this book first, requesting eBook conversion. She had already published the book after designing and formatting the paperback version.
The creation of this eBook started as all others do. Using Adobe InDesign, I created a Book file, then created the first document to go into the book: the frontmatter. Each eBook includes frontmatter, backmatter, and a clickable Table of Contents (TOC). Each chapter of the book also receives their own documents, all added to the larger Book file. I chose the Reflowable Layout so that readers can adjust the size of the text.
I price eBook conversion based on the number of pages of text in the MS Word document I receive (after it’s been set in the industry standard format), plus the number of sections the eBook will contain.
Rosemary chose to remove the images from the document before eBook conversion. This makes things simpler. Though eBooks are capable of containing images, it is impossible to place photos side-by-side; eBooks only allow for above and below unless one uses a Fixed Layout rather than a Reflowable Layout.
Once all the chapters were input and ordered correctly, I added the Table of Contents and linked all the chapter titles. The final step was adding the metadata, which includes the title and author name, the publication information, and all keywords so that it would be easily searchable.
