This uplifting short story by author Bill Stenson was the chosen submission from Tigerpetal Press’s 2024 February submission period. This story, a flashback from a larger novel to explain the backstory of one of Stenson’s characters, showed such resilience in the face of terror that I immeidately connected with it.
Bill and I started with content editing first, though not much needed to be changed. Most of the work done fell under the umbrella of copyediting. From there, we discussed the cover and interior design.
I immediately knew that I wanted to contact Carla Stein (author of a previous publication) to illustrate the cover art for this book. A line drawing of two boys facing down a grizzly was my request, and she did an excellent job! I just needed to add the typography (offset text) adn the textured background, and it was perfect.
After approval, I began the printing and binding process. I used a good quality cardstock for the cover and printed in greyscale to filter out any latent colour in the image. I once again used the quality baronial ivory linen writing paper from Neenah this chapbook. It had such a nice texture. Binding took almost no time at all as soon as I determined the length of thread needed for each book.
Saddle stitch is the simplest binding method for single-signature books, but given the number of pages, I used a 5-hole punch instead of 3. I used white waxed thread so that it blends in with the cover on the outside.
Tigerpetal Press is a small book press dedicated to publishing local authors and poets.
