5 Genres I Like to Read

Posted: July 2, 2024

As an editor, I specialize in Science Fiction and Fantasy, but as a reader, I branch out just a bit more. Fantasy is definitely the genre I’m most drawn to, but I’ve also read Romance, Mystery, and a multitude of Classics. I’m currently in my early twenties, so I read a lot of Young Adult fiction, but I like to dip into both Adult and Children’s fiction as well when I want something a bit more mature or if I want to indulge my inner child.

1. Contemporary Fantasy

I’ve always loved books with aspects of Fantasy, but if I had to narrow it down to a specific subgenre, I think this would be the closest. I love Magical Realism, in which the author weaves magic into the real world that we know. This includes book series like Harry Potter and Percy Jackson, but also Shadowhunters, Shadow Falls, and The Last Dragon Chronicles.

2. Supernatural

This also falls under the Fantasy umbrella, but it specially refers to books with Vampires, Werewolves, or the like. For me, this includes books like Twilight (though I hated the relationships of that book), Nightshade, the Shiver series, and Shadow Falls.

3. Medieval Fantasy

Though my preference is contemporary real-world fantasy, I also love reading books that take place in the past or in a different world. Sword and Sorcery is always a fun time, and it’s enjoyable to explore an author’s made-up world. This includes series like The Inheritance Cycle, Allaigna’s Song, Everless, Inkheart, Beyonders, and The Chronicles of Narnia (though both of the last three are Portal Fantasy).

4. Science Fiction

I especially love this genre when it’s sort of paired with Fantasy like in The Search for WondLa and The Broken Earth Trilogy. Dune was quite a wild ride for me, and a step outside of my comfort zone, but I enjoyed it immensely, even if it was a bit long.

5. YA Dystopia

These books include The Hunger Games and Divergent. As opposed to typical dystopia like 1984 YA dystopia has a brighter disposition. It tends to take place in a dystopian world, though this inevitably leads to rebellion, and the main characters change the world for the better. I’ll be reading The Maze Runner later this year, as I now have the whole set.
