The Immortals Book 5: Night Star by Alyson Noël

it was okay

Second-to-last book here. Normally, I wouldn’t go all the way through a series that I don’t like, but I bought them all, so I might as well finish them.

Series Finally Getting Better

Roman has died, and with him, Ever and Damen’s only chance at the antidote! Can Ever get the antidote away from her former-friend-turned-immortal Haven, who now hates her guts?

After finally getting some character growth last book, Ever is more likable of a protagonist. I still don’t really care about her petty problems, but the messages within the book are getting better now that they aren’t overshadowed by selfish characters. I like how there is finally a contradictory opinion on immortality, as so far, the general consensus within the book is that it’s desirable—which I personally don’t agree with.

Again told in first person present tense from Ever Bloom’s point of view. The story is told in chronological order with minimal insight into the other characters’ thoughts and auras since Ever hasn’t been reading or looking at those much since the first book. She still uses this power purposefully at a few points, though.

I once again read this book the old-fashioned way, and I was starting to fall asleep while reading this book again, which doesn’t happen when I’m really into a book. Because of this, it was a bit harder to get through.

I didn’t dislike Ever as much as the past few books. She was less selfish in this one, but the switch from selfish to altruistic felt a bit fast so it rings just a bit false. Nonetheless, she’s much more likeable now. I wish there was more about the twins in this book, as they had a big change of character near the end. I feel bad for Miles, who has to choose between his two friends; honestly, he is the most down-to-earth and mature of everyone—aside from Munoz—which is saying something. He remains my favourite character overall.

This series turned into a love triangle with Jude’s introduction, but I really don’t see either relationship being good for Ever. She places way too much stock in soulmates and who she was with in her past lives. Why should the past dictate her future? Why is the choice only between Jude and Damen, neither of which are really the best choice? I was a bit confused by Ever’s relationship with her aunt and how it’s falling apart since her aunt found out about her job at the bookshop. It feels like Sabine really blew it all out of proportion, though the way Ever is handling it sure does well in justifying it (she’s handling it horribly).

Again, Noël’s writing is pretty good. It’s still a book that I can get through without getting bored, even though I was falling asleep here and there. Still, just an average sort of book. I’m glad, at least, that there were no typos, though the many, many sentence fragments were a bit annoying.

Again, I’m not really getting the pacing of these books. There isn’t really a set goal of the antagonist. Ever is still trying to get the antidote, and Haven’s storyline in this book is her addiction to the dwindling elixir. She’s just a worse version of Roman, who himself wasn’t much of an antagonist. I can’t see the real plot arc of this book aside from Ever’s new character arc, which should be part of the plot, not the whole thing.

If you’re a similar sort of reader to me, you probably wouldn’t enjoy this series, even if it’s okay. Still, if you enjoy teen supernatural romance, though, this series is probably for you. I’d recommend it to fans of The Twilight Saga.
